Renovating Heritage Homes in Sydney

I do a lot of work on older homes: terraces in heritage conservation areas, heritage-listed houses, and places people want to keep the character of. I like keeping what’s good about an old house and making the rest work for how you live today.

Most heritage projects need a DA rather than a CDC, and council will look closely at what you’re keeping and what’s changing. I sort that out early, before we start designing.

Nioka House, Northwood. Designed by Furio Valich in 1975 and heritage-listed by Lane Cove Council. We added a lift, new bathrooms and redid the lower level, using Obeco glass bricks from Italy to match the original. It won the 2025 NSW Award for Heritage (Creative Adaptation).

Erskineville Terrace. A four-level heritage-listed terrace. We kept the original fireplaces, ceilings and a lot of the interior, relocated the kitchen, and added a new ensuite and garage. Approved by the City of Sydney.

Surry Hills Terrace. A run-down terrace in a heritage conservation area, opened up to the north on a tight budget while keeping its original features.

If you’ve got an older home and aren’t sure what you can do with it, get in touch. Happy to have a chat.
